A&P Denies Merger Comment

August 30, 2010 - A&P has denied reports that it may be merged into a larger company over the long run. The reports came from a comment by a partner in Germany's Tengelmann Group which owns a 41% stake in the ailing U.S. supermarket icon.
In a statement The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. said comments were taken "out of context" stating further that its "managers are focused on achieving an effective turnaround."

Tom O'Boyle Named Executive Vice President Merchandising & Marketing at A&P

August 30, 2010 - The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. has announced the appointment of Tom O'Boyle to the new position of Executive Vice President, effective immediately. He leads the Merchandising, Marketing, Supply & Logistics departments tasked with developing a cohesive synergy between these functions, reporting to President and Chief Executive Officer Sam Martin.

August 24, 2010 - The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. (A&P) has announced the appointment of Frederic F. ("Jake") Brace to the new position of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), effective immediately. Brace will oversee A&P's Finance and Accounting, Real Estate and Information Systems departments, reporting to President and Chief Executive Officer Sam Martin.

Paul Hertz Takes Over as A&P Executive VP, Kramer Replacement

August 20, 2010 - Gone after only four months, Mark Kramer has been replaced by Paul Hertz as Executive Vice President of Operations at The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., Inc. Hertz joins newly installed CEO, Sam Martin, as the latest addition from Office Max where he had served as Executive Vice President of the office products firm’s retail stores. Kramer left to pursue other interests according to A&P.

August 16, 2010 - UFCW Local 464A President, John T. Niccollai has identified those A&P and Pathmark branded stores in the Local 464A jurisdiction that are expected to be closed by the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company.  The Company has announced that it will close 25 stores; 5 A&Ps and 9 Pathmarks are within the Local's jurisdiction:

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. to Close 25 Stores

August 16, 2010 - The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. (A&P) has announced that it will close 25 stores in five states as the Company begins the implementation and execution phase of its comprehensive turnaround. The affected stores include locations in close proximity to other Company stores, those facing real estate and cost issues, and underperforming non-core stores. The store closures are expected to be completed in the Company's fiscal third quarter.

Analysts Comment on A&P’s Financial Condition

August 2, 2010 - Saying “We believe A&P’s capital structure is ultimately unsustainable at current performance levels.” Moody’s investor services has downgraded its speculative grade rating of A&P. This joins Standard and Poor’s rating agency, which also downgraded the company to CCC with a negative outlook.
